How To Prepare Your Furnace for Spring

Although it may not seem like it yet it’s officially spring and warmer weather is on the way! With spring comes spring cleaning, the all important time of the year to focus on cleaning up and getting rid of the clutter in your house. When considering your spring cleaning plans don’t forget to put your furnace on the list. You might be thinking “but it’s getting warm, I don’t need to think about my heating system until fall again”. But there are many reasons why you should prepare your furnace for spring.

Last fall we wrote about how to prepare your furnace for fall. Much of the advice given in that post is applicable here when getting ready for warmer weather. You’ll want to make sure your oil and air filters are checked and replaced. You’ll also want to get your furnace cleaned, soot and scale build up needs to be cleaned out and water & condensation should be dried up to prevent corrosion and rusting of your tank or heat exchanger. Finally you’ll want to have your system checked over to make sure everything is running efficiently. All of these tasks can be completed by a a certified technician from your heating company. They’ll be able to give your heating system the spring cleaning it needs while also giving you an update on how it’s running. We also suggest filling up your tank one last time to prevent condensation from building up while it’s empty.

So why should you make sure to do all of this now instead of leaving it until fall when your furnace is needed again? It’s tempting to put it off until later so you have one less spring cleaning task on your list. But there are many reasons why you’re better off getting it done now.

The first has to do with saving money, a great incentive. Many heating companies have spring sales on maintenance and cleaning packages to increase their sales at a time when work is slowing down because the heating season is over. Take advantage of a sale and get a good deal on your cleaning.

As mentioned above spring is a slower time for heating companies. Service technicians have less on their schedules so you’ll be able to easily get an appointment scheduled when it’s convenient for you. If you wait until fall you may run into trouble getting a good appointment time. Techs are far busier trying to keep up with all the customers who waited to have their cleanings and inspections done.

Finally, if there is a problem with your system spring and summer are much better times to have repairs done. If your technician finds a major issue with your furnace or if you find out you need your system replaced it might take time to repair it or schedule a replacement. Having your inspection and cleaning done in the spring gives you lots of time to get that work done before you have to turn your heat on again. If you wait until fall you might end up without heat for a time while repairs are completed. Repairs and replacement can also be costly but having them done in the summer while you’re not paying for heat can help ease your budget and spread out the costs more effectively.
