Hello, West Nova Fuels & Superline Fuels followers! I’m Scott, a delivery driver for the West Nova Fuels Lunenburg branch. People are always asking what it’s like to be an oil truck delivery driver so today I’m going to give you a little insight on what my job is like day-to-day!
My alarm goes off at 6:30 am, it’s always an early morning when you’re a delivery driver! I wake up, turn up the heat in my house (remember our tips to save money on heating include not heating a sleeping house!), and get breakfast ready for the kids.
By 7:00 am I’m saying bye to my family and out the door to start up the truck and conduct my ‘pre-trip’ routine to make sure everything is in safe working order. That includes checking fluid levels and general wear and tear of various parts.
At 7:30 am I usually arrive at the office to pick up my delivery tickets. Then I head to the bulk plant to fill up the truck with heating oil.
An hour later, I’m in Lunenburg for my first delivery. Most deliveries take less than ten minutes to fill up the oil tank and leave the ticket at the door of the customer’s house.
There is one that always takes longer…One of my favourite customers to visit is Capone. He’s a 200lb Rottweiler who absolutely must be given a treat before we get down to work delivering his family’s heating oil. He’s the friendliest dog in the world so I always make sure to have lots of treats on hand!
By noon I’m ready for a break and sit down to a quick lunch before heading out on my afternoon deliveries. Did you know that delivery drivers can travel 200-300km in one day, depending on how many times we need to return to the bulk plant to fill up the truck, which holds 18,500L of heating oil. Being a delivery driver is not easy but it’s very rewarding to know we are keeping people warm in the winter.
5:00pm is usually the end of my work day and I head home and do my post trip checks to make sure the truck is still in good condition. The rest of the evening is mine to spend at home with my family!
