Air Conditioners

Summer has arrived and with it some very warm temperatures. While Nova Scotia doesn’t have a long summer, it can definitely have some pretty hot days. While not everyone may feel the need for an air conditioner to keep their home cool this summer, there are some benefits that can make it a good investment.

Having a cool place to retreat to when a heatwave hits is definitely a benefit of having an air-conditioned home, but did you know that air conditioning can also have health benefits too? Symptoms of breathing conditions can often be exacerbated by the heat and humidity so a cool house can make the summer heat easier for asthmatics and people with other breathing issues. A cool house also means a cool place to exercise when the temperatures rise, making you more likely to continue your workout routine through the summer in temperatures that are safer to exercise in. You also may find that you sleep better in cooler temperatures and can get a better night’s rest and wake up feeling refreshed when you have an air-conditioned home.

There are various types of air conditioning options available to you should you decide to make the investment. Here’s a short rundown of some options to help get you started and make the best decision for your home.

Window Air Conditioners

These are small units that fit in a window of your home. They’re most ideal for those who only want to cool down one room and not the whole house or apartment. They are the least costly of the options and are easy to install yourself. However, you’ll need multiple units if you want to cool more than one room as they’re not simple to move around.

Portable Air Conditioners

Another unit type air conditioner that is great for cooling one room at a time but, as the name suggests, can be moved from one room to another so you don’t have to choose between, say the living room and the bedroom. They don’t require much in the way of installation, however there is a reservoir that needs to be emptied regularly so the maintenance is a little more than the window unit.

Central Air Conditioning

This option is the biggest investment and most complicated of the options but will cool your entire home and could be seen as an improvement that raises the value should you decide to sell in the future. Central air consists of installing ductwork or using existing ducts to push cool air around your home from a fan and refrigerant unit. You’ll want to source a good contractor experienced in air conditioning installations to do the work needed for a central air system.

Whatever option works best for you, we hope you have a great summer and stay cool!
