There’s a crisp chill in the air, nights are getting cooler and the leaves on the trees are starting to turn. We may not want to admit it get but fall is here in Nova Scotia. As much as you want to hold on to the lazy days of summer it’s the time of back to school, sweaters and dusting off that heating system.
Just like any other piece of home equipment your oil furnace needs an annual cleaning to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. Soot and scale build up needs to be cleaned out, water & condensation should be dried up and oil and air filters need to be checked and replaced.
Did you know that soot contains sulphur? When mixed with any forming condensation in the system the sulphur creates a corrosive acid that can deteriorate any metals parts of your equipment. Think of it like a car sitting in a salt water puddle, the salt slowly eats away at the car decreasing it’s life span and you’ll have to repair and replace it more often than you thought, costing you money.
After sitting dormant all summer there may also be some water and condensation build up so it’s best to have the bottom of the tank and the filters and lines checked for that to prevent the above situation.
We also suggest turning on your furnace for a little while well before it gets cold enough to need it, just to make sure it’s all running at peak efficiency. Then, if there are any problems you’re not left out in the cold while it’s being repaired.
Finally the oil filters and air filters should be checked and replaced if needed to keep your oil and air clean and running smoothly.
Clean filters are key to an efficient furnace. Many people like to put this off until it gets cold enough to use their heating system again but why not do it now and find out if there’s any issues before it’s too late. After all, winter is coming!
